Secrets in Microfilm.

This morning I searched through the Leonardville Monitor on microfilm. The newspaper had been published in Leonardville, Riley County, Kansas where my family lived after coming to America from Deutschland.

I was looking for the obituary of my great-great-great grandfather, Marten Hinderks Swart. I did find a little snippet written about him, but not much.

September 26, 1889

“Mr. Swart, a resident of our city and an old and respected citizen died last Monday and was buried yesterday. We are not able to give particulars of his sickness and death. The family and friends have our sincere sympathy in their bereavement.”

That’s it!

There was a little mention of Marten’s son Johan on November 24, 1887. “John Swart, one of Walnut Creek’s substantial farmers, was a welcome caller yesterday.”

I didn’t look through the entire reel. I just happened to stop on this page with John’s name on it.

I’m still looking for a photograph of Marten Hinderks Swart.
